Historical Note:
Orthodoxy has been present on Union's campus since the nineteen fifties
when Georges Florovsky (one of the early founders of the WCC) and
the Alexander Schmemann came to the campus with the fledgling
St. Vladimir's seminary. This was a period before they bought land
and built the present seminary buildings in Crestwood, New York. At
first, with the encouragement of Union President Henry Pitney Van
Dusen, they rented Union buildings (lodging their first seminarians
in a Union building --now the Olive Tree Deli on Broadway). For
morning worship they bussed down to to the Orthodox cathedral on
Second Street.
